GénEroos. Journal of research and dissemination of gender studies
Vol. 3 No. 5 (2025)This issue of the journal brings together a series of texts that, from different fields of action and disciplines, address women's political participation at different levels of government. Almost unanimously, the results of these investigations -supported by qualitative and quantitative approaches, diverse data sources and theoretical frameworks- coincide in pointing out that the presence of women in politics and legislative work confronts them with similar conditions, regardless of whether the context is Mexican or Latin American. Among the most relevant research findings, the following common issues stand out: both their party colleagues and members of opposing parties, as well as the citizenry itself, require them to demonstrate that they have the capacity to perform the position for which they were elected, compared to their male peers in the same positions; negative evaluations regarding the exercise of their authority and decision-making, which tend to be interpreted as temperamental actions or hormonal changes, instead of considering them as legitimate forms of exercising power; and the confrontation of various barriers they must overcome due to their condition as women in the political sphere.

To this is added an analysis of the close relationship between the economy, the labor market, the feminization of care, and women's labor trajectories. Another article examines the links between violence, changes in family structures and economic transformations through the experience of an Otomi community. Gender is an analytical category of feminist imprint that questions the foundations of practically all spheres of reality. As a perspective of analysis, i.e., as situated knowledge, it refers to women, men and their reciprocal relations, and aims to contribute to an inclusive society where women and men recognize each other in their shared humanity. As an impulse for interdisciplinary work, the contributions gathered in GénEroos 16 lead us through different paths to the plurality and richness of gender studies.

Gender - as a form of social structuring and hierarchization - determines the experience of being “man” or “woman” from the subjective and cultural sphere. The meanings that have been given to this experience have changed with the passage of time and new social circumstances, but they have not failed to confirm how much weight gender has in the distribution of work, interpersonal relationships, development opportunities, knowledge production, art and the very experience of being and being in the world.
