Violence and maternal mortality in indigenous contexts of Oaxaca: an ethnographic look

Abstract

The article explores the relationship between maternal death and violence in indigenous contexts in the state of Oaxaca; mainly gender violence against women by formal and informal health services. Through the analysis of the multiple factors that intervened in the death of three pregnant, childbirth or postpartum women, we evidenced the social dynamics and the different types of violence that contributed to or directly caused the death of these indigenous women. These results derive from a research project on maternal death in indigenous regions that is currently being carried out in the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas, between CIESAS-Itsmo and CIESAS-Sureste.
