Abstract

This article discusses factors that influence the proportional discrepancy between union bases with high female participation in educational sectors in Colima and union leadership positions, occupied predominantly by men. The information presented is based on semistructured inter views with union leaders, women who occupy a union office, and teaching staff that does not actively participate in union life. The results show that the unfavorable perception toward unions discourages active participation, especially by women. Results also highlight factors such as women’s fear of taking on a double or triple day (work home union) and the possible repercussions on the family (partner and children) associated with the lack of time.
