History of the journal
GénEroos is a biannual academic journal whose main objective is to disseminate research from a gender perspective. It is, at the same time, a plural forum that enables the analysis and debate of diverse theoretical and practical proposals that, from multiple disciplines, emerge to promote the establishment of a culture of equity. These positions reflect the plurality of the field of gender studies and the position and ideas of the authors.
The journal was born as part of the Asociación Colimense de Universitarias A.C. (ACU) in 1993, in its beginnings the journal focused on dissemination and opened a new space for the publication of these works in the university space. The first issue of the magazine was dedicated to motherhood and creation, with the idea of giving a new look at motherhood.
Starting with issue number 5 of the first period (January 1995), the University of Colima, through the University Center for Gender Studies, began to publish the magazine together with the ACU.
Its objective was to give a voice to the members of the University of Colima, and to encourage the broad, critical and reflective participation of professionals, women and men, whose experience in the various areas of social and professional life was compelled to be seen in the light of a new and profitable perspective, in social terms, knowledge and social justice (Valenzuela, 2014).
The editorship of the journal fell to Verónica Valenzuela, who already had experience in gender studies. While the Editorial Board was composed of Guillermina Araiza, Sara Lourdes Cruz, Blanca Gutiérrez, Marta López, Sara Griselda Martínez, Marina Saravia, Salvador Silva and Verónica Valenzuela, who did a very important job of grounding the local and connecting with professionals in their respective fields at regional and national levels.
The magazine was well received by female academics and researchers; in addition, importance was given to art and this section constituted more than a third of the content; the aim was for women to dare to write about their work, about themselves, about the difficulties this entails, for which writing workshops were organized with Socorro Arce and literary creation with María Luisa Puga and Carmen Villoro.
In 1998, GénEroos magazine received the Arnaldo Orfila award at the Guadalajara International Book Fair, given to outstanding publications in the area of dissemination.
The magazine is made up of four sections: Research, Dissemination, Art and Letters, and Reviews that address various discussions from a gender perspective.
The journal is divided into three periods. In the first period, which began in 1993, 36 issues were published every four months. In the second period, which began in 2007, it became a research and dissemination journal on gender studies. In March 2023 the journal obtains the digital ISSN and thus inaugurates a new era that coincides with its entry into various indexes and repositories that consolidate the work done over 30 years of existence.
