ASEAN Cooperation on Transboundary Haze Pollution Caused by Forest Fires in Indonesia
Keywords:
Transboundary haze pollution, forest fire, ASEAN, IndonesiaAbstract
The problem of transboundary haze pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems that occurs in many parts of the world. The Southeast Asian region has also faced this problem due to forest fires on some Indonesian islands. This problem has generated an environmental, economic and political impact directly and indirectly in several countries of the region, it also worsens environmental conditions worldwide due to the generation of greenhouse gases. As a problem at the regional level, ASEAN has a responsibility to mediate between member states to foster cooperation in order to solve the problem at its roots. This article aims to analyze ASEAN cooperation in the case of transboundary air pollution caused by forest fires in its region in recent decades. ASEAN has endeavored to find a way to solve the problem of transboundary air pollution from the control and combat of forest fires on the islands in Indonesia through agreements and cooperation, however, the capitalist system within the community. ASEAN economic and political problems due to the wrong defense of sovereignty by Indonesia have not allowed to reduce the main factors of the forest fire due to the interest in the economic development of this country and others.
