Determinants of medium and high-technology manufacturing exports in Mexico (1990–2023): an empirical analysis using a Vector Error Correction Model

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the determinants of medium- and high-technology manufacturing exports in Mexico during the period 1990–2023. To this end, a Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) is estimated using time series data. The results indicate that, in the short run, these exports are influenced by their previous dynamics and by foreign direct investment. In the long run, the findings show that medium- and high-technology manufacturing exports are determined by historical export performance, research and development expenditure, foreign direct investment, the degree of trade openness of the Mexican economy, and demand from the United States.
