The digital diabolic. Essay on neo-baroque fantasy in three works by José Rosario

This essay proposes the thesis that in the art of contemporary Panamanian painter José Rosario, there is a group of works that are masks of a fantastic nature, executed in a style that could be called digital neo-baroque. To this end, a brief hermeneutic analysis was conducted on three digital works by the Panamanian artist (all devil-type masks from Panama), concluding that in all of them there is
indeed an exacerbation of form and the manifestation of a semiotics in which the rational is unidentifiable from the real. Two fundamental metaphors emerged: José Rosario’s diablicos: a set of pixels that reconfigure the idea of the religious and the artificial; and On the “folk” and the atavistic impregnated in the digital: fabulation of the mask as a mask of fabulation.
