Abstract

The premiere of the South Korean film Broker in June 2022 has resulted in a recent increased visibility of the Baby Box phenomenon, a system which allows babies to be left anonymously in boxes installed for it.

In South Korea, this system was originated from the personal initiative of the Protestant Pastor Lee Jong-rak, and as of March 2020, more than 1,700 babies had been rescued. The actions of this pastor and the team that helps him have created a stir, as this is a controversial issue, with an ambiguous and complex legal framework, which produces very disparate social reactions. This study includes a summary study of the legal framework and the main reactions produced. This article aims to help visualize the Baby Box phenomenon and add a small grain of sand to help solve it.
