Abstract

This article proposes an analysis of the encounter between literary and journalistic discourses in Las muertas (1977), a novel by the Mexican writer Jorge Ibargüengoitia (1928-1983) inspired by the popular case of the “Poquianchis” and where he offers a fictional and parodic version. Here, we present an approach to the novel based
on the characteristics that it shares with the Crime news ―in Mexico known as “Nota roja”― (exaggeration, sensationalism, spectacularity, melodrama, colloquial language, among others), in order to demonstrate its reversal and transgression, as well as a redirection
towards social criticism. This text is derived from an ongoing research project, which examines in greater depth the influence of this journalistic genre on Mexican narrative in the 20th and 21st centuries.
