The Diffuse Habanas of Lourdes Casal. Life, Exile, and Poetry

This paper analyzes the configuration of the experiential field of exile in four poems by Lourdes Casal: her series of three poems dedicated to Havana and her emblematic “Para Ana Veltfort.” The aim is to demonstrate that in these texts, it is largely the author's own experiences that shape the presented experiential field, in a pendular movement between the autobiographical element and the creation of an alternate poetic subjectivity. In the four selected poems, behind the loss of memory and the outlined identity, there lies above all an act of self-restoration that De Man considers inherent to all autobiographical texts. Casal imagines and writes about absence, and through her writing, she halts the advance of her forgetfulness and uprooting.
