Abstract

Training in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) on digitalization and sustainability needs to be incorporated into all strategic areas of the company. Currently, these concepts are a support to improve efficiency in processes, elevate the performance level of all employees and maintain the competitiveness. The aim of this research is to determine which areas require more training in the SMEs of the state of Querétaro that allow them to demonstrate a high level of performance in the context of digitalization and sustainability. The theoretical framework that supports this study is the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework, and the methodology implemented to achieve the objective is Crisp-set qualitative comparative analysis (csQCA). The results determine that the strategic areas that need to be prioritized for updates because their operation influences the performance of companies established in Querétaro are the financial area, the human talent area, the marketing and sales area, the digital technologies area, and the operational processes area. Within these business areas, employees are currently developing skills such as adaptability, teamwork, resilience, creativity, digital communication tool management, adaptation to digital resources, digital learning and collaboration, ethics, inclusion and gender equity practices, and efficient resource management in order to strengthen digital and sustainable practices in SMEs
