Abstract

At the beginning of 2014, theaters presented the trailer of another Marvel movie. A far cry from Avengers and Spider-Man (whose rights were wholly owned by Sony) this film featured a group unknown to a non-comics audience and, a writer/director (James Gunn), whose previous work was far from the established Hollywood fare. These factors heralded an impending box office failure.
